Welcome to CardioJunkie's 1000 Mile Challenge!

Humble Beginnings
This challenge was started by a young Naval officer named Darryl in 2009 who at the time was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq for 12 months (see article).  As one of the few ways to break the monotony of 12-16 hour shifts 7 days a week, Darryl began tracking how many miles he ran each day on a simple excel sheet that he created in his spare time (now known by many as the Mileage Tracker).  One day he had an epiphany - maybe others would enjoy tracking their miles as much as he did ... after all, it was an awesome motivator to see the numbers go up each day.

So he emailed the simple excel sheet to his comrades in Baghdad, Iraq and informally challenged them to run/walk/elliptical/bike 1000 miles while deployed to the combat zone.  Not only was it well received, but the concept went viral ... spreading to almost every FOB (forward operating base) in Iraq and to Afghanistan as well.  People started asking for t-shirts to symbolize their completion of the challenge, so he had the above design created collected donations for the t-shirts with 100% of the  proceeds going to Iraqi charities.

Thousands of service members, government civilians and contractors used the mileage tracker since the initial email was sent in December of 2009, resulting in over $5000 raised for Iraqi children and families, more than 10,000 pounds of body fat burnt, and approximately 1 million cumulative miles covered (walked, ran, biked, elliptical etc.).  The money raised helped build a soccer field, buy school supplies, hygiene items and games for Iraqi children, and helped support underprivileged Iraqi families.

Darryl has since returned home safely and is now pursuing a PhD at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.  He branded the original concept of the 1000 Mile Challenge and decided to initiate CardioJunkie.com to raise scholarship money for motivated but disenfranchised college-aged youths throughout the nation in an effort to help those who are willing to better themselves, but lack the financial ability.  Your involvement in the 1000 Mile Challenge will directly support young college-bound men and women who desperately need our support.

We challenge you to get your body moving and walk/run/elliptical/bike/swim 1000 miles in 2012.  Not only will it help you develop a healthy lifestyle, but by wearing a 1000 Mile Challenge t-shirt you will be directly helping others in your community.
